There’s something magical about watching color burst and bloom — especially when it happens inside ice.
Frozen Fireworks is a Curiosity Club favorite that turns a simple tray of ice into a slow-motion light show, where colors crack, swirl, and spread like fireworks frozen in time.
It’s calm, mesmerizing, and packed with real science kids can see as it happens.
🧪 You’ll Need
Supplies
- Ice cube tray (standard size; silicone works best)
- Water (about 2 cups total)
- Food coloring (red, blue, yellow, green — liquid or gel)
- Vegetable oil (½ cup)
- Small clear cup or bowl (8–12 oz)
- Dropper or pipette (recommended for precision)
- Toothpicks or wooden skewers
- Shallow baking dish or tray (for melting display)
- Freezer
- Paper towels (for cleanup)
❄️ What to Do
- Fill the ice cube tray with water, leaving about ¼ inch of space at the top.
- Place the tray flat in the freezer and freeze until completely solid (4–6 hours or overnight).
- Pour ½ cup vegetable oil into a small clear cup.
- Add 10–15 drops of different food coloring colors into the oil.
- Gently stir with a toothpick once or twice only — do not fully mix.
- Remove the frozen ice cubes and place them in a shallow baking dish.
- Slowly drizzle the colored oil mixture over the ice cubes using a dropper or spoon.
- Watch as the colors sink through cracks and melt channels, creating firework-like bursts inside the ice.
- As the ice melts, observe how the colors expand, branch, and move.
- Let kids experiment by adding more color, scratching the ice surface, or stacking cubes for layered effects.
