What’s Really in Your Blood?
At Curiosity Club we love asking big questions about the tiny things inside our bodies.
One of the most amazing things about you is something you can’t even see most of the time…
Your blood.
Bug once asked:
“Wait… is blood just red juice?”
Babe adjusted her pink glasses and said,
“Actually, it’s a whole transportation system made of different parts working together.”
So today we’re going to build a model of blood you can actually see.
And the coolest part?
Each layer shows what blood is really made of.
🧪 You’ll Need
• Corn syrup
• Red beads
• Rice
• White lima beans
• A clear jar
🔬 Let’s Build Blood
1️⃣ Pour the plasma
Fill your jar about halfway with corn syrup.
This thick golden liquid represents plasma, the part of blood that carries nutrients, water, and important molecules around your body.
2️⃣ Add the red blood cells
Drop in red beads.
These represent red blood cells, which travel through your body delivering oxygen so your muscles, brain, and organs can work.
3️⃣ Add the platelets
Sprinkle in some rice.
These tiny pieces represent platelets, which help your blood clot and stop bleeding when you get a cut.
4️⃣ Add the white blood cells
Finally, add a few white lima beans.
These represent white blood cells, the defenders of your immune system that help fight germs and keep you healthy.
👀 Watch What Happens
As everything settles, you’ll see the layers separate and float differently inside the jar.
Just like in real blood, each part has a different job and density.
You’ve just built a mini model of the system that keeps your body alive.
🧠 Babe’s Fun Fact
Your body contains about 5 liters of blood — that’s roughly the same amount as a large bottle of soda!
And inside that blood are billions of cells working together every second.
🤪 Bug’s Science Moment
Bug looked at the jar and said:
“So basically… I’m full of tiny delivery drivers and germ-fighting superheroes?”
Babe nodded.
“Exactly.”
✨ When kids build it, they understand it.
✨ When they see it, they remember it.
