🌍 STEAM Salt Art Earth Activity (Curiosity Club Style)

✨ What if you could paint the Earth… and watch it come alive?

Not just color it…

Not just draw it…

But watch the colors travel, spread, and swirl like magic oceans and growing land 🌊🌱

This is one of those “wait… WHAT just happened?!” activities that feels like art—but secretly sneaks in some really cool science.

Let’s make our own textured Earth 🌍

🎨 Come Play With Us

Babe was very focused.

“Earth has oceans AND continents,” she explained seriously.

Bug grabbed the glue and said,

“Perfect. I’m making sparkly land blobs.”

(We support both approaches here.)

🧺 What You’ll Need

🌍 Let’s Create Our Earth

1. Draw Your Planet

Start with a big circle—your Earth!

Add some wiggly land shapes inside.

(Bug’s continents looked like dinosaurs. Still counts.)

2. Glue the Lines

Trace your drawing with glue.

Make it thick… like frosting lines!

Babe: “Continuous lines help the experiment work better.”

Bug: “Continuous lines = more glue = approved.”

3. Sprinkle the Magic (Salt!)

Place your paper on a tray and sprinkle salt ALL over the glue.

Shake off the extra…

✨ Now you’ve got a bumpy, textured Earth!

4. Mix Your Colors

Blue for oceans 🌊

Green for land 🌱

Add a tiny bit of water if needed.

5. The Magic Moment 👀

Use your dropper and gently add color to the salt.

And then…

✨ WATCH.

The color starts moving.

Spreading.

Traveling.

Like tiny rivers running across your Earth!

Bug gasped:

“IT’S ALIVE.”

6. Let It Dry

Leave your masterpiece flat and let the magic settle.

(No touching… even though it’s VERY tempting.)

⏳ Wait & Wonder

This is the part where kids slow down (just a little).

Watch how:

It’s quiet magic happening right in front of you.

🧠 Babe + Bug Moment

Babe’s Fun Fact 🧠

Salt is full of tiny spaces, which makes it porous.

When you drop liquid on it, the liquid moves through those spaces.

That movement is called capillary action!

Bug’s Response 🐞

“So the salt is basically a tiny straw jungle that drinks color??

Cool. I made a juice planet.”

🌱 What Kids Are Actually Learning

💛 Grown-Up Note

This activity is one of those sneaky wins.

It looks simple… but it creates:

You’re not just making art.

You’re building wonder.
